Into the exclusion zone: a scientist’s visit to Fukushima’s radioactive soil

INES Posted on 15th March 2016 by Subrata15th March 2016

The unfamiliar dial tone gives way to the voice of Subrata Ghoshroy, a contributor to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists famous for setting the Doomsday Clock. Ghoshroy is in Calcutta, but he seems to travel a lot, having been on a recent visit to areas left vacant since the March 2011 Fukushima meltdowns. “To be frank we were a little bit, ah, cavalier about it because these areas indeed were contaminated, remain contaminated,” he told the Post. Subrata Ghoshroy at … Continue reading →

A Scientist Presses for Action on Many Fronts: A review of The Need for a New Economic System

INES Posted on 25th February 2016 by Lucas25th February 2016

by John Scales Avery   The Need for a New Economic System by John Scales Avery is an important book for everyone concerned over the future of humanity.  The urgent voice of the book stems from Dr. Avery’s seeing the discontinuity between the loving care that people bestow on their children and their failure to reduce the harm to their children from a destructive economic system, climate change, resource depletion, and war.  This book of advocacy demonstrates the need for … Continue reading →

Peace, feminism and humanism – this is CODEPINK

INES Posted on 23rd February 2016 by Lucas23rd February 2016

While US-Presidents waged wars, destroyed whole regions, and victimized millions they protested decidedly with great personal commitment – the members of CODEPINK. Even at President Bush’s press conference, they raised their voices against the propaganda of war and risked severe personal ramifications – the members of CODEPINK. With actions of civil courage, they continuously warned of the dangers of nuclear weapons and drone warfare – the members of CODEPINK. They protested against the – according to international law – … Continue reading →

Taking stock: The US-India nuclear deal 10 years later

INES Posted on 18th February 2016 by Lucas15th March 2016

By Subrata Ghoshroy A decade has passed since negotiations first began on the “US-India Civilian Nuclear Cooperation Agreement,” an accord that, when it was finally signed, gave India a waiver from the rules of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. In a nutshell, the act ended a 34-year ban on nuclear trade with India. Popularly known as the “US-India Nuclear Deal,” it was a watershed moment in the history of US-India relations, marking a transition from a lukewarm and sometimes downright adversarial … Continue reading →

In Munich, a frightening preview of the rise of killer robots

INES Posted on 18th February 2016 by Lucas18th February 2016

The Munich Security Conference is an annual catalogue of horrors. But the most ominous discussion this past weekend wasn’t about Islamic State terrorism but a new generation of weapons — such as killer robots and malignly programmed “smart” appliances that could be deployed in future conflicts.
